Ganden Monastery

Ganden Monastery is located about 45km, almost 2 hours drive east from Lhasa. The monastery , the first temple of Yellow Hat Sect(Gelug), was built by Tsong Khapa in 1409 AD. It is regarded as the top one of the six monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism for Gelug. Tsong Khapa passed away in Ganden Monastery in 1419AD, and his remain pagoda was set up here. Today there are about 50 buildings housing the states, sutras and relics in the monastery.

Due to its stunning location on a ridge overlooking the Kyichu Valley with an altitude of 3800m, visitors can try the high kora for the best views of the valley. Please make sure you can walk up that high place before you go there.
