Hanging Monastery

The Hanging Monastery,悬空寺 in Chinese, is located at the foot of Heng Mountain in Shanxi Province, China. It is about 5 kilometers of Hunyuan County, and about 65 kilometers southeast of Datong City.

The Hanging Monastery was constructed on the west cliff of the mountain, facing Jinxia Gorge, initially by a monk called Liao Ran during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534). Then the monastery was renovated and expanded during successive dynasties.

The whole temple is a wooden frame structure. There are holes drilled into the cliffside to accommodate the wooden pillars that were the support of the whole temple. Some people have claimed that the wooden pillars did not work as support, the temple was constructed without the help of the wooden pillars, which were added later for preservation and safety.

The temple boasts a fine collection of 80 statues, including statues for three main religions of China: Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.
